Trident
On
14th March 2006 a clear majority of Scottish MP's voted against
the Government's plan to replace the Trident nuclear weapon system.
Thirty-three voted against, only twenty-two in favour, while four
abstained. However, this was not enough to prevent Westminster from
supporting the proposals in the White Paper on the future of British
nuclear weapons. If this is implemented it will mean that nuclear
weapons we be based in Scotland for the next 50 years.
The Scottish Trade Union Congress and Scottish CND
have published a new report on the employment implications of Trident.
The report argues that more jobs could be created in Scotland if
Trident were not replaced. It also proposes that the skills currently
used to build nuclear-armed submarines could be applied to projects
which would help to tackle climate change.
The
true cost of Trident over the next fifty years will be £100
billion; or five times the government’s estimated cost, according
to a new estimate from Scottish CND. A poll by ICM for Scottish
CND shows that 73% of Scots oppose spending billions on Trident
replacement. If you feel the way that we and the majority of Scottish
people do, then our group offers you the opportunity to turn your
